# How do I create, edit or delete an API key
## Once the API is activated on your account, manage your own API keys from Settings \> API Keys — add, edit or delete them without contacting support.
Once the Argus Tracking API is activated on your account, you create, edit and delete your own API keys from Settings \> API Keys — no need to contact support for routine key management.

## What you need before you start
- The Argus Tracking API feature must already be activated on your account. See [how to activate the Argus Tracking API](https://help.argustracking.co.nz/knowledge-base/how-do-i-activate-the-argus-tracking-api?hsLang=en-au) if it isn't yet.
## How do I create an API key?
1. From your Argus Dashboard, go to **Settings \> API Keys**.
2. Select the blue **Add** button in the top left corner.
3. Give the new API key a **name** and **description** for your own reference, then select **Save**.
4. Copy the **Access Key** and **Secret Key** shown for the new key, and use them to connect your application to Argus.
## How do I edit an API key?
On the API Keys page, select the blue **Edit** icon in the left column next to the key. From there you can change the key's name and description, and copy its Access Key and Secret Key again.
## How do I delete an API key?
On the API Keys page, select the blue rubbish bin icon in the delete column next to the key you want to remove.
## How do I know it worked?
A new or edited key appears in your API Keys list immediately, with its name, description and Access Key visible. A deleted key disappears from the list and stops working right away.
## What if it doesn't work?
- **Settings \> API Keys isn't available:** the API feature isn't activated on your account yet — see [how to activate the Argus Tracking API](https://help.argustracking.co.nz/knowledge-base/how-do-i-activate-the-argus-tracking-api?hsLang=en-au).
- **Your application can't connect with the new key:** double check the Access Key and Secret Key were copied exactly, with no extra spaces.
- **You deleted a key by mistake:** create a new one following the steps above — a deleted key can't be restored, so any application using it will need the new key's details.
