# What is Driver ID?
## Driver ID attributes trips and events to the driver using it: iButton or RFID tags on standard GPS units, or Vision AI FaceID on Vision AI-equipped vehicles.
Driver ID identifies who is driving a vehicle, so trips, events and driver behaviour reporting are attributed to the right person. Argus offers two Driver ID methods: iButton, for standard GPS units, and Vision AI FaceID, for Vision AI-equipped vehicles.

## What does Driver ID do?
It attaches a driver's name to a vehicle's trips and events, instead of just the vehicle. This makes drivers accountable for their own driving behaviour, helps you understand who is using a vehicle and when, and feeds driver behaviour reporting so you can identify who needs support to drive more safely. It also removes the need for a driver log book on light fleet.
## How does Driver ID work?
On a standard GPS unit, Driver ID works via an **iButton** tag: a driver logs in to a vehicle by touching their individual tag against an installed iButton reader, which assigns them as the driver for reporting. If a driver doesn't log in with their iButton, a buzzer sounds to remind them. RFID cards work the same way, as an alternative tag type.
On a Vision AI-equipped vehicle, Driver ID works via **Vision AI FaceID** instead: the in-cab camera automatically identifies the driver by comparing a live face capture against reference photos stored on their Argus profile, with no tag, log-in or other driver action required. iButton and FaceID apply to different vehicle types — a standard GPS unit uses iButton, a Vision AI-equipped vehicle uses FaceID.
## Who uses Driver ID, and when would I use it?
Fleets that share vehicles across multiple drivers use Driver ID to know who was driving at a given time, particularly useful for incident investigation and for identifying which drivers need coaching based on their individual behaviour.
## What do I need to use Driver ID?
For iButton: an iButton reader installed in the vehicle and an iButton tag for each driver, both supplied by Argus. For Vision AI FaceID: a Vision AI-equipped vehicle and reference photos registered against the driver's profile.
