# What is Smart eRUC?
## Smart eRUC is a solar-powered digital windscreen display that replaces the paper RUC licence for light vehicles and updates automatically overnight.
Smart eRUC is a digital windscreen display that replaces the paper Road User Charges (RUC) licence in electric, plug-in hybrid and diesel light vehicles, updating automatically instead of needing manual renewal.

## What does Smart eRUC do?
Smart eRUC is a wireless, solar-powered display, about 4.3 inches, mounted on the windscreen. It shows your vehicle's current RUC licence and updates automatically overnight through your Argus account, rather than you having to buy and physically swap a paper licence.
## How does Smart eRUC work?
Smart eRUC is delivered with our third-party RUC partner. The display connects wirelessly using its own integrated SIM, so it doesn't need wiring — installation is self-install, without technical expertise. Once activated, your RUC purchases and licence updates are managed through your Argus account and applied to the display automatically.
## Who uses Smart eRUC and when would I need it?
Smart eRUC is for electric, plug-in hybrid and diesel light vehicles that are RUC-liable. ## What do I need to use Smart eRUC?
- A second direct debit form for our third-party RUC partner, in addition to your usual Argus direct debit form. Installation and RUC purchasing don't start until this form has been returned.
- A mechanical hubodometer fitted to the vehicle — this is a hard prerequisite for Smart eRUC.
- NZTA's records showing your vehicle has switched providers to the hubodometer. Switching providers is done by submitting the RUCHO form to VTNZ/NZTA.
## How do I get started with Smart eRUC?
