How do off-road geofences work?
Off-road geofences extend geofencing to private off-road areas for RUC Collect; once approved by Argus support, trips into them are validated on an ongoing basis.
Off-road geofences extend geofencing beyond public roads to private areas — such as airports, parks, ski fields, forestry and farming zones. They're part of RUC Collect, and once Argus support has approved one, RUC Collect automatically detects trips into it and validates them on an ongoing basis.

What do off-road geofences do?
Off-road geofences cover privately owned areas that are inaccessible to the general public — essentially anywhere off the public road network. As part of RUC Collect, they let you claim back off-road RUC travel expenses without manually identifying every off-road trip yourself.
How does off-road geofence approval work?
Every off-road geofence you create needs approval before it's usable. Argus support agents review off-road geofence requests, and turnaround is usually within 48 hours. Once approved, the geofence is added to the off-road geofence database and becomes available for immediate use.
How are off-road trips validated?
Off-road trips are checked, and corrected where necessary, by an automated validation process that runs on an ongoing basis rather than only when a RUC licence is first created. Trips recorded after the first RUC calculation on a licence are validated too, not just trips that existed when the licence was first set up. A vehicle that stays stationary in an off-road zone for more than a day before returning to the road is correctly handled by this validation, rather than risking an inaccurate off-road trip being logged.
Who uses off-road geofences?
RUC Collect users who need to claim back off-road RUC charges use off-road geofences to identify and track their off-road travel expenses across their whole approved off-road geofence database, not just the geofences they created themselves.
