What is a group, and how does it affect what my users can see?

A group organises assets or geofences and, when applied to a user, restricts them to seeing only that group's items.

A group organises your assets into areas or divisions within your fleet, and can be used to restrict which assets a user is able to see. There are two types: Asset Groups and Geofence Groups.

Also known as / customers also ask: asset group, geofence group, what is a group, restrict user access, group permissions, division or area grouping

What does a group do?

An Asset Group is a group of tracked assets — vehicles, plant, or anything else you track. A Geofence Group is a group of geofences, such as homes, suppliers or recycling depots, and is used to organise results in the Geofence Report. Applying a group to a user restricts that user to only seeing the assets or geofences in that group.

How does a group work?

For example, if you want your service team to only see service vehicles and not management vehicles, you'd create a Service group containing the service assets, then apply that group to each user in your service team. You'd do the same for a Management group and your management team. A single asset can belong to more than one group.

Who uses groups, and when?

Fleet administrators managing user access across different teams, sites or divisions, and anyone who wants their reports organised by geofence grouping rather than every individual geofence.

What do I need to use groups?

Administrator or Power User access to create and assign groups. Note that Administrators can't be restricted to a group — they always see every asset in the account, even if a group is applied to their user profile.

How do I get started with groups?

Create your first group from My Assets, Settings, or an asset's Profile page — see how to set up a new group. Once a group exists, add individual assets to it from their profiles — see how to add an asset to a group or change its group.

This article doesn't cover applying a group to restrict a specific user — Argus support can walk through user-level settings for your account. Contact Argus support for help with user access.
