What is decommissioning, and why would I decommission a GPS unit?

Decommissioning remotely retires a GPS unit and sends a replacement, avoiding a technician visit to physically remove it.

Decommissioning is how Argus retires a GPS unit from an asset that's being disposed of — remotely, rather than sending a technician to physically remove it. It's requested through Device Management.

Also known as / customers also ask: cancel a device, cancel my device, stop tracking, decommission, remove a GPS unit, retire a unit, end of life asset

What does decommissioning do?

Instead of organising a technician visit to remove the GPS unit from an asset you're disposing of, Argus remotely terminates the existing unit and sends a replacement unit for you to have installed into your new asset. This means the old asset doesn't need to be taken off the road just for a removal.

How does decommissioning work?

You request a decommission through Device Management, choosing a date for it. There is a charge for decommissioning — contact your account manager or Argus support to confirm current pricing for your account. A replacement unit is sent to the address held under Settings > Account Details, so it's worth checking that address is current. Reinstalling the replacement unit into your new asset is a separate request and is charged separately.

Once a GPS unit is decommissioned and removed from your account, all historical data associated with it is permanently deleted — run any historical reports you want to keep before the decommission date.

Who uses decommissioning, and when?

Anyone disposing of, replacing, or permanently retiring a tracked asset — for example when selling a vehicle (see what happens to the GPS unit when you sell a vehicle) or upgrading fleet hardware.

What do I need to use decommissioning?

Administrator or Power User access to submit the request through Device Management.

How do I get started with decommissioning?

Submit a decommission request through Device Management, run any reports you need first, and confirm your account address is up to date so the replacement unit reaches you.

This article doesn't cover current decommissioning pricing — contact Argus support or your account manager for that.
