What is the asset lifecycle, from ordering a GPS unit to decommissioning it?
An asset moves through ordering, install, naming, grouping, odometer upkeep and decommissioning — this page sequences the articles for each stage.
An asset's life in Argus runs from ordering the GPS hardware through to decommissioning it when the vehicle leaves your fleet. This page sequences the individual how-to articles so you can follow the whole journey, or jump straight to the stage you need.
Also known as / customers also ask: asset setup, new vehicle setup, onboarding a vehicle, adding a new asset, end to end asset process, setting up a new vehicle
What does the asset lifecycle cover?
It covers everything that happens to a tracked asset between the day you order a GPS unit and the day you decommission it: installation, naming and photographing it, adding it to a group and cost centre, keeping its odometer accurate, and eventually taking it out of service.
What are the stages, in order?
Most assets move through the same sequence:
- Order and install. Request new GPS hardware and book an installation — see how to order new GPS hardware, request a reinstall or decommission a unit.
- Name it. Once the hardware is installed, the asset appears in My Assets under its registration by default — see how to change the name of an asset.
- Add a photo. Personalise the profile so it's easy to recognise — see how to add a photo to your vehicle.
- Add it to a group and cost centre. Groups control which of your users can see the asset; cost centres feed your invoicing — see how to add an asset to a group or change its group and how to apply a cost centre to an asset.
- Keep the odometer accurate. The Argus odometer is built from GPS distance plus the reading entered at install — see how Argus GPS and vehicle odometers work together.
- Stay compliant. Vehicle compliance and servicing are covered in a separate section of this knowledge base — Argus support can point you to the right article for your account if you can't find it.
- Decommission it. When the vehicle leaves your fleet, request a decommission rather than a physical removal in most cases — see what decommissioning is and what happens to the GPS unit when you sell a vehicle.
Who uses this page?
Anyone adding, updating or retiring an asset — most steps are available to Administrators and Power Users, and ordering or decommissioning hardware specifically requires one of those two roles.
How do I get started?
If you're bringing on a new vehicle, start with ordering the hardware. If you're managing an existing fleet, jump to whichever stage applies — naming, grouping, photographing or updating a profile can all be done independently and in any order.
This article doesn't cover the day-to-day detail of each stage — follow the linked articles above for the full steps. For anything not covered here, contact Argus support.
