What you need before you start
- Your account is on the Vision AI plan.
- The driver already has a user profile in Argus.
- Their vehicle has a Vision AI dashcam fitted and active.
How do I register a driver's face photos for FaceID?
- In Argus, go to Settings > Users & Drivers.
- Open the driver's user profile.
- Scroll to the Vision AI - FaceID Registration section.
- Upload 5 photos of the driver, either from the Facial Database or as a Local Photo.
- Select Save once your photos have passed the quality check.
What are the photo requirements?
Each uploaded photo is automatically checked for quality and given a score from 0 to 100 — only photos scoring above 40 are accepted; photos that fail are highlighted so you can remove and replace them before saving. For a local photo: accepted formats are .jpg and .png only, maximum file size 500 KB, at least 300 x 300 pixels with a face area of at least 100 x 100 pixels, the face clearly visible and front-facing (within about 15 degrees), with even lighting and no shadows, glare or cropping. Use clear, well-lit, front-facing photos, avoid sunglasses, hats or heavy shadows, and upload 5 varied photos per driver to improve recognition accuracy.
How does FaceID identify a driver once photos are registered?
When a driver gets into the vehicle and starts it, the Vision AI camera captures a photo and compares it against that driver's registered photos. If a match is found, the driver's name is attached to the vehicle's tracking data in real time. The camera checks again every 60 seconds while the vehicle is moving, with no further action needed from the driver or fleet manager. The comparison is scoped to the drivers registered on your own account, not the wider Argus customer base, which is also why photo quality matters.
How do I update or remove a driver's registered photos?
- Go to Settings > Users & Drivers.
- Open the driver's user profile.
- In the Vision AI - FaceID Registration section, select the photo you want to remove.
- Delete the photo and upload a replacement if needed.
- Select Save.
How do I know it worked?
The driver's photos show as saved in the Vision AI - FaceID Registration section, and their name starts appearing on live tracking, event details and trip history for that vehicle once they drive it.
What if it doesn't work?
- The FaceID Registration section isn't visible — it's only available on the Vision AI plan; contact your Argus account manager to find out more.
- My photo file is being rejected — Vision AI only accepts .jpg and .png files; re-export or rename the file and try again.
- A driver isn't being identified on trips — check their registered photos and replace any with a low quality score.
- The driver shows as unidentified on some trips but not others — add more photos in varied lighting conditions to improve identification accuracy.
This article doesn't cover Driver ID via iButton or RFID, used on standard GPS units — see Driver ID. If a driver still isn't being identified after checking the above, contact Argus support.
