How does Smart Renew work?

Smart Renew invoices you when a RUC or rego licence is due and dispatches it automatically once paid, via our Smart Renew partner, on a weekly NZTA sync cycle.

Smart Renew automates the purchase and delivery of RUC and vehicle registration licences to your chosen address, invoicing you when a licence is due and dispatching it automatically once the invoice is paid.

How does Smart Renew work?

Smart Renew is configured under Fleet Management > Smart Renew. When a RUC or registration licence is due, you're invoiced for it. Once the invoice is paid, your licence is purchased automatically and dispatched to your preferred or default shipping address by our Smart Renew partner, who handles the invoicing and physical fulfilment side of each purchase.

How is Smart Renew activated on my account?

Contact your account manager or Argus support to activate Smart Renew. Once activated and you've set up the Smart Renew page for your assets, our Smart Renew partner sends you an email with more information and a link to set up direct debit payments for future renewals.

When does Smart Renew actually run?

Argus syncs with NZTA every Tuesday night for renewals and purchases, and the purchase itself is processed the following Wednesday — a renewal that becomes due after Tuesday's sync is picked up in the following week's cycle. RUC purchases trigger once the remaining distance on a licence reaches your configured threshold. Registration renewals trigger 28 days before expiry.

What if syncing stops?

Smart Renew stops syncing if the RUC or rego purchasing toggles are turned off for 4 weeks or longer without a renewal happening. We recommend leaving the toggles on to avoid interrupting the process. If syncing has already stopped, you can resume it by going to your Compliance page and manually updating the RUC and rego fields to bring them current.

Where do licences get delivered, and can I change that?

You can set a preferred address per asset in the Attention To and Address to Send Licence fields on the Smart Renew page. If left blank, licences ship to your company's default shipping address — see how to change your default shipping address for Smart Renew to update it. Because licences are couriered, the address needs to be a physical address rather than a PO Box.

Are there fees involved?

Purchasing and delivering licences through Smart Renew involves admin and courier costs on top of the RUC or rego charge itself. For current figures, see your pricing schedule or check with your account manager.

Where do RUC rates come from?

RUC rates themselves are set by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, not Argus. For current rates, see nzta.govt.nz — RUC rates and transaction fees.
